What to Do Right Now
A water heater problem is frustrating, but a few quick steps keep things safe until help arrives:
If water is spreading from the unit, close the cold-water shutoff valve above the water heater if you can reach it safely — usually a lever or wheel on the pipe going into the top of the tank. Keep away from standing water near electrical outlets, and never touch a wet electric water heater or its wiring.
For a gas unit, if you smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas utility or emergency services first — call a plumber once it’s safe. Don’t try to relight a pilot light over and over if it keeps going out; that pattern points to a fault that needs professional attention, not persistence.
Don’t remove access panels or attempt internal repairs yourself. Water heaters combine water, pressure, and heat — plus gas or high-voltage electricity. A wrong move risks burns, flooding, or worse. The safe DIY list for water heaters is short: shut off the water, shut off the power or gas, and call.
